Tipping customs vary a lot around the world:
| Where | Usual restaurant tip |
|---|---|
| United States, Canada | 15–20%, often expected |
| United Kingdom, Ireland | 10–12.5%, often added as a service charge |
| India | 5–10%, if no service charge is on the bill |
| UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia | 10–15% is appreciated; check for a service charge first |
| Most of Europe | Round up, or 5–10% |
| Japan | Not expected |
The formula
tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
each person pays = total ÷ number of people
Worked example
A 1,234 bill with a 10% tip is 1,234 + 123.40 = 1,357.40. Split four ways, that's 339.35 each, or 340 each if you round up.
Tip is worked out on the amount you enter. If your bill already includes a service charge, you usually don't need to add a tip on top.
