Zulu time is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the single clock used across aviation, shipping and the military so everyone works to the same time whatever their time zone. "Zulu" comes from the phonetic alphabet word for Z, the letter for the zero time zone.
Times are written in 24-hour format followed by Z, so 2:30 pm UTC is 1430Z. Flight plans, NOTAMs, METARs and TAFs all use Zulu time.
How to convert
local time = Zulu time + UTC offset
Zulu time = local time − UTC offset
Worked example
Doha is UTC+3 all year. A departure at 14:30 local is 1130Z. Delhi is UTC+5:30, so 03:00 local on 8 October is 2130Z on 7 October, the day before.
Daylight saving
Many places move their clocks forward in summer, which changes their offset from Zulu. London is UTC±0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, and New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer. Gulf states, India and most of Asia do not use daylight saving. This converter uses your browser's time-zone database, so the offset is correct for the date you enter.
