How your GPA is worked out
GPA = total of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits.
- 1
Grades to points
A 4 · B+ 3.3 · A− 3.7 · B 3
- 2
Times the credits
12 + 13.2 + 14.8 + 9
= 49 points - 3
Divide by credits
49 ÷ 14 = 3.50

Each letter grade is worth a number of points. Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits. Courses with more credits count for more.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 (A+ 4.3 on some scales) | C+ | 2.3 |
| A− | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C− | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D− | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B− | 2.7 | F | 0 |
Worked example
An A in a 3-credit course (12 points), a B+ in a 4-credit course (13.2), an A− in a 4-credit course (14.8) and a B in a 3-credit course (9) add up to 49 points over 14 credits. 49 ÷ 14 = 3.50.
Cumulative GPA
To combine terms, weight each by its credits. A 3.2 GPA over 45 credits plus a 3.5 semester over 14 credits gives (3.2 × 45 + 49) ÷ 59 = 3.27.
Schools differ: some don't use plus and minus grades, some weight honours or AP courses, and some leave pass/fail courses out. Check your school's grading policy for your official GPA.
